Research

My research interests are mainly related to different aspects of waterfowl ecology ranging from monitoring and management questions to studies of migration patterns and population processes in individually marked goose populations. My longest running research program is the International Waterbird Census for Sweden which started in 1967 and includes surveys of ducks, geese and other waterbirds in the entire country incl. offshore waters (aerial surveys). Studies of marked (mostly neckbanded) populations of Greylag Geese and Bean Geese have been used to follow individual birds and their performance through the annual cycle on breeding, moulting, staging and wintering areas, in recent years also including satellite telemetry.

My research has also included different applied aspects of waterbird ecology such as restoration projects, effects of different kinds of exploitations on birdlife. The latter aspect has included large scale Impact Assessment Studies in relation to birds and large exploitation projects in marine areas such as the reactions of migratory birds on the Öresund Bridge, the effects of windmills I marine environments etc.
