My primary research interest during my PhD-studies was on flight performance of birds. My study species was the common swift (Apus apus) because of its extremely aerial lifestyle and its unique adaptations to this.
I studied flight performance both with respect to aerodynamics and flight behavior. The studies both involved wind tunnel experiments in which detailed examination of the wake and the kinematics can be performed and radar studies, where the birds' behavior during migratory flight can be studied.
The goal of my research is to widen the knowledge and understanding of animal flight and migration. Main collaborators are Anders Hedenström (supervisor) Thomas Alerstam(co-supervisor) and Johan Bäckman.
