My research is based on how patch use decisions of seed eating birds can be used to evaluate environmental quality. I use the giving up density (GUD), leftovers after foraging, as a behavioural measure. I am working with Dr Ola Olsson to investigate how different factors such as heat, predation risk and seasonality in water and local food abundance influence the patch leaving decisions of foraging birds in a dry woodland savannah. I have also been measuring body temperatures and daily energy expenditure of birds to reveal the physiological mechanisms with which they could manage heat stress. This aspect of my work was supervised by Prof. Jan-Åke Nilsson. My project site is at the Amurum Forest Reserve (09o53’N 08o59’E) northeast of Jos, Central Nigeria.
