Population trends

A basic requirement for any nature conservation work is to know how animal numbers change over time. But changes in animal numbers are also interesting for pure scientific reasons, since they may indicate which environmental factors are limiting for individual animals. Escaping such limits is a fundamental aspect of animal migration, dispersal and movement.

Within CanMove there are several schemes that aim at monitoring animal numbers, or study the processes directly affecting animal numbers. The Swedish Bird Survey monitors the population trends of the breeding birds in Sweden since the mid 1970ies. Additional information comes from standardized counts at migration hot spots (Falsterbo and Ottenby) and of birds during winter. Population processes at the landscape scale is studied particularly in farmland, focusing on birds and insects.
